Brookhouse school:Is this the most expensive school in Kenya?

Brookhouse International School Screen Shot 2013-02-10 at 3.35.47 PMIf you thought education is expensive in Kenya then you have never checked Brookhouse International School fees structure. It costs Ksh9.1 million to complete primary and secondary eduction in this elite school located in Karen area of Nairobi City. This is the school that will host the first ever Kenya presidential debate tomorrow night.

It costs Ksh450,000 per year for a two-year old child who has just joined school at Brookhouse . According to the school’s fee structure posted on its website Early Years  day scholars pay Ksh150,000 per term.

“During the first few years in the school children build on basic skills. It is still important for pupils to have the opportunity to ‘play’ and careful planning ensures that they are provided with stimulating practical activities, which lay the foundations of key concepts and social skills,” reads a statement at the school’s website.

After the early year a child goes to Year 1 where the tuition fees per term is sh190,000,like the early years classes there is no boarding facilities for this age. This translates to sh570,000 per year. This is enough money for a masters student in a public university here in Kenya to finish a course.

During Year’s 2 – 5 Day scholars pay  sh340,000 and while these in the boarding section pay sh615,000 per term. This translate to sh1.8million for a year.

“Children enter Junior Prep when they commence Year Two, and lessons become less ‘play’ orientated. Over the next few years their work becomes more complex, with Senior Prep classes commencing in Year Seven. They increasingly take on more responsibility, and are expected to set an example for the younger children. In their final year some students are selected as Prep School prefects or House Captains,” says the School.

Year’s 6 – 8  day scholars pay sh375,000 per term and  boarding sh650,000 per term.

“The transition from Prep School to Secondary School is marked by a major examination at the conclusion of Year Eight.”

Year’s 9 – 11  the students pay sh410,000 for day scholars and whooping  sh685,000 for boarders. This translate to sh2million per year

“The Secondary section of the school commences with the one year Pre-IGCSE Year 9 programme, leading into the two years of the IGCSE course during Year’s 10 and 11. Upon successful completion of the IGCSE examinations pupils can progress to take their AS and A-level courses in Year’s 12 and 13, before moving on to universities across the globe.”

Year’s 12 – 13  day scholars pay sh425,000 and  boarding sh700,000 per term.

“In Year’s 10 and 11 students follow courses leading to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations set by the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and Edexcel Boards in the UK.”

At this school caution money alone costs sh200,000 payable one for boarders and sh100,000 for day scholars.

Now that is expensive woo! Are these kids insured against failing? I mean forking out such staggering sums of money surely there must be a fool proof measure against the highly dreaded ‘stupid kid syndrome’ otherwise I know of a less costly alternative to education. Just saying

  2. that is the best school for the best education for your child, if you can afford. It is better than taking your child abroad for basic education!

  3. It depends frm which side you view the expense. From you and me it is veeeery expensive yet there are alternatives. But from the oiled CEOs n our highly paid mps, well… that could be chicken change. Some companies foot the fees on behalf of their top management.

  4. Apparently not, the most expensive is gems school,
….It is not a school for the children of the average wage earner. It would cost a cool Sh22 million to take a child through the school from the foundation stage (FS) 1 to Year 13. And you won’t even be done with the secondary education.
